Abstract
935,245. Programmed electric control systems. REGIE NATIONAL DES USINES RENAULT. 'Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 22, 1958; June 16, 1959], No. 35514/59. Class 38 (6). In a system in which a motor positioning a body is controlled by the difference between numerical signals representing desired and actual positions of the body, differences between higher and lower significant figures of the signals cause coarse and fine corrections at high and low speeds respectively, the final direction of operation of the motor being always the same to avoid the effect of backlash. Fig. 6 shows a system in which a table 7 of a machine tool is adjusted to successive positions along one coordinate axis by a lead screw X driven by a motor 8 in accordance with a programme on a perforated tape 12. Digital signals from photocells 13 associated with the tape are first compared in an electronic computer 14 with digital signals from photo-cells 11 associated with a perforated disc 10 driven through 100/1 reduction gearing by motor 8 so that any difference is effective to cause operation of motor 8 until a position bearing a predetermined relative relationship to a position corresponding to the first two significant figures of the tape signal is reached. A perforated disc 9 directly driven by motor 8 is then substituted for disc 10 and a second adjustment, taking into account the last two significant figures of the tape signal, is obtained by operating motor 8 at a lower speed to miminize overshoot. Finally, overshoot is removed by reversing the motor and running it at a still lower speed to remove the overshoot. To avoid different effects of backlash the first adjustment is always made to the same side of the final position. A similar system may control positioning of the table about another co-ordinate axis. Modifications involving a greater or lesser number of adjustments are described.
