Abstract
Polymers, e.g. block polymers, of one or more olefins containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a Zieglertype catalyst and controlling the molecular weight of the polymer by periodically interruping the polymerization, introducing hydrogen and an inert gas alternately at predetermined intervals, and then continuing the polymerization by introducing one or more monomers after each interruption. At each interruption unconsumed hydrogen and monomer may be removed from the polymerizate. The inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or a rare gas, may be introduced with the monomer. The monomer may be ethylene, propylene, butylene or mixtures. The catalyst is preferably the reaction product of TiCl4 and (C2H5)3Al2Cl3, or (C2H5)2AlCl, or a mixture of (C2H5)2AlCl and C2H5AlCl2, which has been heat-treated at 80 DEG -180 DEG C. for 1 to 10 minutes, and activated with (C2H5)3Al.
