Abstract
934,977. Upsetting. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 19, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 27748/62. Class 83 (4). An elongated article, particularly a steel bar 11, is upset by heating a first portion 26 imping- ing a cooling fluid upon the heated surface, applying axial pressure whilst supporting the article radially by means 21 to upset the heated first portion, and repeating the process upon a second portion adjacent the first portion to upset the second portion into a continuous mass with the first portion. The bar 11 is held in a rotatable clamp 14 and during upsetting is rotated by a chuck 15 which also applies the axial pressure. Heating to 1800-2000 F. is effected by an induction coil 23 supplied by a high-frequency power source 25, and cooling air from a source 29 is supplied to a ring 24 and discharges through orifices 27. The ring 27, inductor 23 and guide means 21 are mounted on a slide 20 movable along rods 18 by a lead screw 32 whereby the slide is driven manually or automatically along the bar whilst the axial pressure is maintained by chuck 15. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inductor is a tubular coil which also receives the cooling air and has discharge orifices on its interior surface. The coil also may be double-walled to permit circulation of cooling water between the walls.
