Abstract

The copolymerization of a conjugated diolefine with a monomeric ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and an aliphatic saturated alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms is initially carried out with the total quantity of the diolefine component and 40 to 60% by weight of the total quantity of the monomeric ester, final polymerization taking place after adding the residual quantity of the monomeric ester, the ester being present in said copolymer in amounts of 10 to 90% by weight. The residual quantity of the ester may be added continuously or intermittently. The conjugated diolefins may have up to eight carbon atoms, e.g. 1.3-butadiene, 2-methyl butadiene, 2-chlorobutadiene, 2.3-dimethyl butadiene. Polymerization may be carried out in solid phase, in solution or in emulsion. Initiators may be alkali metal persulphates, perborates, acyl peroxides, such as benzoyl peroxide, alkyl hydroperoxides, ammonium persulphates, pyrosulphites, bisulphites, formamidine sulphinic acid, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, azodiisobutyric acid dinitrile and polyamines. In solution polymerization the solvent may be aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic esters, dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, and mixtures thereof. Emulsifiers may be alkyl-sulphuric acid esters, salts of alkyl-sulphonic acid, salts of sulphonated oils, salts of fatty acid condensation products with amino- or hydroxy-alkyl-sulphonic acid, salts of alkylamines, reaction products of ethylene oxide with phenols, or isomerized abietic acid. Regulators may be long-chain alkyl mercaptans, or dialkyl xanthogen disulphide. Stabilizers may be phenyl-b -naphthylamine, or bis-(3-cyclohexyl-5-methyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-methane.
