Abstract
934,271. Making turbine blades; extruding; forging. HENRY WIGGIN & CO. Ltd. June 27, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 11202/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A metal blank 10, for subsequent machining into a turbine or like blade, is formed by extruding a metal billet through a die. A cast cylindrical billet of nickel-chromium or nickel-chromium - cobalt creep - resisting alloy is cast into an ingot 1. This is machined to remove surface defects, placed into a chamber 2 and therein upset by an hydraulic ram 5 to form a billet with a curved end having a convex surface 3 and a central depression 4. The resulting billet is then heated to 1170‹ C., placed in an extrusion press with the curved end 3, 4 leading, and extruded through a die to form an extruded product 6. The latter is then cut transversely into blade blank lengths 9 and each length is then cut longitudinally along line 8 into blade widths, with a brading tool which tends to remove any portion of the metal where segregation has occurred. Both the transverse and longitudinal cuts may be inclined to the blank surfaces, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
