Abstract

934,153. Mass spectrometers. ATLASWERKE A.G. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 4447/61. Class 39 (1). A magnetic mass spectrometer has an ion source 6 in which a band-shaped ionization zone is produced, e.g. by electron bombardment, the band-shaped ionization zone being disposed perpendicularly to the direction of the magnetic field and the ions being converged to a line focus at aperture diaphragm 15 at the. entrance to the magnetic field. The magnetic field focuses in a higher order than the first and for this purpose the ion beam makes an angle of # = 35 degrees 16<SP>1</SP> with the perpendicular to the magnetic field boundary 16. Deflecting electrodes 18, 19 are shown. The iron optical system includes two part accelerating and focusing electrodes 9, 13, 14. Deflecting voltages may be applied to these twopart electrodes for convertion purposes. Focusing electrodes 13, 14 may be flat instead of curved.
