Abstract

933,620. Epicyclic gearing. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. Aug. 28, 1961 [Oct. 7, 1960], No. 30992/61. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] An hydraulic pump or turbine, or a pumpturbine (i.e. an hydraulic machine which can operate as either a pump or a turbine), comprises two coaxial propeller-type wheels of opposite hand, spider means for supporting the wheels in operable position and gear means connecting the wheels for power transmission to a rotating shaft and to each other and to the spider means. In the hydraulic pump or turbine or pump-turbine shown, the driving or driven shaft S is connected to oppositely rotating rotors A, B through epicyclic differential gearing comprising planet gears 2, 3 freely mounted on shafts carried by a planet carrier disc c. Gears 2 mesh with a sun gear 1 fixed to the shaft S and with an internal ring gear 5 fixed to the hub of rotor B. Gears 3 mesh with a sun gear 4 fixed to a stationary shaft F and with an internal ring gear 6 fixed to the hub of rotor A. Rotor A is journalled on shaft F, the latter being carried by spider arms G1. A hub carried by spider arms G2 provides bearings for shaft S and rotor B. The shaft 7 of the planet carrier disc C is supported by the shafts S and F. Rotors A and B run in opposite directions with equal torques, the speeds being adjusted by the differential gearing so that the whirl imparted to the water by rotor A is removed by rotor B. Alternatively, a slight residual whirl may be imparted to the water by making the two sets of sun and planet gears of different diameters.
