933,257. Packaging-machines. TIME Inc. Feb. 26, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7374/62. Class 94(1). Piles of newsprint 11 are carried on intermittently moving conveyers 12, 13 to a position below a compressing unit 20 carried on slides 21, vertically reciprocated on rods 24 by means of a pneumatic cylinder 27 under electrical control, the unit 20 having a pivoted plate 42, for compressing the curled edge of the piles, which operates after a pressure plate 40 for compressing the flat portion of the piles. A time switch 35, which may be controlled by other parts of a handling and conveying system, actuates a solenoid 64 to cause a pressure channel device 62 to operate the piston of a rack and pinion driving the conveyers. A ratchet in the drive to the conveyers causes them to be stationary during compression of the piles. A switch 67 operated by a member on the rack 65 actuates a similar circuit to lower the piston of cylinder 27. As the plate 40 compresses the flat portion of the pile, a pre-determined pressure in the cylinder 27 actuates a switch 45 which, by means of a further circuit, lowers the piston of a cylinder 48 in the unit 20, thereby forcing down the pivoted plate 42 on the curled edge of the pile. De-actuation of switch 67 reverses the cycle.
