Abstract

933,230. Coating by dipping. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. April 12, 1962, No. 14253/62. Addition to 891,295. Class 82. The apparatus and method of the parent Specification is modified so that on leaving sinker 26 there is provided a means for positively dampening the vibrations of the strand S e.g. of steel in a non-oxidizing atmosphere before the strand discharges into the air, by siting an enclosure 30 at and above the molten metal surface where the strand leaves the bath 20, e.g. of aluminium; said enclosure supporting therein a deflecting bar 28 in contact with, and determining the degrees of deflection of strand S. Combustible gas, e.g. natural gas, is admitted at 32 to maintain a non-oxidizing environment both where the strand leaves the melt and also around the zone where the strand contacts the deflector bar; this gas discharges around the strand where the strand leaves the enclosure at cut-away 31 (see Fig. 5 not shown) and burns on contact with theair, the burning gas promoting flow-back of excess coating metal. For effective dampening of the vibratory energy in the strand by bar 28 contact must be made within 1¢-3 ins. of the bath surface. To permit observation of the contact of strand S with bar 28 a sight tube 29 is provided. The degree of deflection is controlled by varying the position of enclosure 30 through the agency of movable support arm 30B.
