Abstract

Water-insoluble resins containing hydrazide groups are made by reacting hydrazine at elevated temperatures with a cross-linked copolymer derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing one or more esterified carboxyl groups, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, octyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl acrylates, methacrylates, maleates and fumarates. As cross-linking agents present in the copolymers there are specified divinyl benzene and toluene, trivinyl benzene, methylene bis-acrylamide and glycol diacrylate. The copolymers are preferably prepared in bead form and treated with hydrazine whilst swollen by an organic solvent. The resulting products are used for the recovery or removal of aldehydes or ketones from aqueous, organic, or gaseous media. The aldehyde-reacted resin may be regenerated by treatment with hydrochloric acid followed by sodium hydroxide. The examples describe the bead polymerization of divinyl benzene (containing ethyl styrene) with methyl, ethyl and n-propyl acrylates and methacrylates and the polymerization of trivinyl benzene with methyl acrylate and ethyl methacrylate, benzoyl peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide being used as a catalyst. In Example (2) the polymerizable mixture contains benzine, and the resulting beads have a sponge structure. Specifications 725,980, 839,377 and 894,391 are referred to.ALSO:Water-insoluble resins of a sponge structure and containing hydrazide groups are made by reacting hydrazine at elevated temperatures with a cross-linked copolymer having a sponge structure made by the process described in Specification 894,391 and derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing one or more esterified carboxyl groups. In an Example (2) a mixture of methyl acrylate, divinyl benzene (containing ethyl styrene) and benzine is subjected to bead polymerization, and the dried beads having a sponge structure are reacted with hydrazine. The product may be used for the recovery or removal of aldehydes or ketones from liquid or gaseous media. Specifications 725,980 and 839,377 also are referred to.
