Abstract

<FORM:0933166/IV(a)/1> In a machine for applying a coating to the underface of a pile fabric, as the fabric is passed to and over a coating roller, the selvedges are lifted out of contact with the coating roller by means, which, under the control of a sensing device arranged to sense the outermost edge of pile, are adjusted transversely of the machine so as to follow any transverse movements of the fabric. In the embodiment shown as fabric passes over a coating roller 1 the selvedges are lifted out of contact with the roller by the lower end 14 of an arm 13 which carries a nut 12 mounted on screwed rod 2. The rod 2 is driven by motor 3 through gear-box 4 and the motor is controlled by a control box 5 which is itself controlled by micro-switches 6, 7 actuated by lever 8. The lever 8 is linked to a rod 10 which carries feeler 11 kept in contact with the outermost row of pile tufts B. In operation any transverse movement of the fabric sensed by the feeler 11 is automatically followed by the arm 13.
