Abstract

The invention comprises (1) a process for making amides of the formula <FORM:0932655/IV(a)/1> (wherein the radicals R, which may be the same or different but cannot both be hydrogen atoms, are hydrogen atoms or cycloaliphatic or saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals) in which a barbituric acid of the formula <FORM:0932655/IV(a)/2> is hydrolysed at a temperature between 200 DEG C. and the decomposition temperature of the amide and at superatmospheric pressure; and (2) amides of the first general formula above wherein one R is an allyl radical and the other is an ethyl, n-pentyl, 2-methylallyl or 2-methylbutyl radical. The hydrolysis may be effected in water or aqueous solution when an alkali metal barbiturate is used, or in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia when the barbiturate or free acid is used. The pressure is preferably that generated in the system and the process may be operated as a continuous one. Detailed examples are given.
