Abstract

<PICT:0932593/III/1> <PICT:0932593/III/2> A sampling switch for use in gas chromatography comprises a first fluid line, a movable member containing a first passage which constitutes a portion of the first fluid line in the first position of the movable member, a second fluid line including a second passage in the movable member positioned to be substituted for the first passage in the first fluid line when the movable member is moved to the second position, and a chamber surrounding a portion of the first fluid line and defined by a movable member, and by an outer sealing member surrounding the inner sealing member and also in sealing engagement with the movable member, as well as by a flexible joining member connecting the two sealing members, and means for independently resiliently biasing the sealing members against the movable member, the movable member being arranged to move relatively to the chamber, and the chamber forming a portion of the second fluid line when the movable member is in the first position. As shown in Fig. 2 the transversely movable slider 27 of rectangular cross-section is resiliently mounted between the two open end opposed cups 23 and 24 by opposing spring assemblies 31 and 32 bearing upon annular members forming annular chambers 29 and 30, said annular members are preferably made of polytetrafluoroethylene and are in sealing engagement with slider 27. The carrier gas passes vertically downward through line 28 into a vertical passage 281 in the slider 27 when in the first position. Meanwhile the sample gas flows consecutively through chamber 29, passage 38, chamber 30 and passage 39 and when 27 is moved to its second position, passage 38 is aligned with line 28 and the fixed volume of gas in passage 38 is injected into the carrier stream. The sample gas flow continues as before except that it now travels between chambers 29 and 30 through the passage 281 in its new position. Thereafter the reverse movement of slider 27 uses passage 281 as a sample gas measurement volume and transfers this volume into the carrier gas flow line 28. The sample passages 281 and 38 may be made tortuous to increase the sample volume. Fig. V shows an embodiment suitable for use in frontal analysis or displacement chromatography. A first stream is established through line 55 and by moving slider 2711, an interface between the first stream and a sample stream in line 551 is established. All the passageways in the above apparatus may be made of polytetrafluoroethylene.
