Abstract
Polymers containing the repeating group <FORM:0931919/IV(a)/1> where m and n are integers and n may be zero are prepared by heating vinyl sulphur pentafluoride alone or with ethylene in the presence of a free-radical-producing catalyst chosen from organic peroxides and azo esters. The proportion of ethylene may be from 0 to 10,000 moles per cent. The temperature of the reaction is preferably from 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. and the reaction may be carried out under an elevated pressure, e.g. from 20 to 1,500 atmospheres. Catalysts specified are tertiary butyl peroxide and diisopropylazobisisobutyrate. In the Provisional Specification polymers of the general formula <F\1> where m, n, x are integers and x > m or n, and n may be zero and R may be a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom, or a phenyl, carboxyl, carbethoxyl or cyanide group, are made by heating vinyl sulphur pentafluoride with a vinyl monomer CH2=CHR in the presence of the above catalyst. Polymers of vinyl sulphur pentafluoride alone are usually liquid.
