In a method of treating a film, as with cleaning fluid, or a liquid wax, the liquid is applied in the form of a spray, the film subsequently being subjected to an air blast, which strips off the solvent, or solidifies the wax, as the case may be. In the form shown, the film is passed from a reel 10 through a preliminary bath 12 of cleaning fluid, and then up through an open-ended casing 14. Here a further application of cleaning fluid is sprayed on to the film, conveniently by entraining fluid from bath 12 in an air jet. The jet is directed edge-on to the film, so that the spray reaches both sides at once, and the film may also be vibrated at this stage. In its upper part, the casing 14 has further air jets closely spaced from the film, so that the effect is to strip or blow the solvent off. Fig. 1 shows three alternative paths to a take-up spool 16 after the film has left the casing 14. The path in full lines includes a waxing bath 17 and two buffs 18, 20. The path in dotted lines bypasses the waxer 17, and the path in chain-line by-passes both waxer and buffs.
