Abstract

Cubic zirconium oxide which is stable at room temperature is prepared by heating zirconium carbonate precipitated from solutions of hydroxide-free zirconium sulphate, at 1050 DEG to 1200 DEG C., or by heating zirconium hydrate or zirconium hydrous carbonate at 750 DEG C. to 1200 DEG C. until zirconium oxide having the X-ray diffraction pattern of cubic zirconium oxide is obtained. When heated at 1200 DEG C. or above for two hours, the cubic zirconium oxide becomes unstable and is converted to monoclinic zirconium oxide. The zirconium compound may be mixed with silica, which is incorporated in the crystals of stable, cubic zirconium oxide obtained as above. The stable, cubic zirconium oxide may be mixed with water to form a glass polishing composition. The composition also may contain silica, cerium oxide and a stabilizing additive e.g. calcium oxide.
