Abstract
931,371. Liquefaction of gases. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 29, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 19222/61. Class 8(2). In a process for liquefying a compressed feed gas having a boiling point below -80C at atmospheric pressure e.g., nitrogen wherein after preliminary cooling the compressed feed gas is liquefied in a path 35 of a liquefier 34 in countercurrent to a gaseous refrigerant, which may also be nitrgoen, at a temperature below the condensation temperature of the compressed feed gas, the refrigerant gas having been compressed and after cooled is expanded without liquefaction in a turbine 63 and the relatively warm refrigerant leaving the liquefier path 37 is used to cool the incoming feed gas and is returned to the refrigerant compressor inlet. As shown nitrogen is admitted through a duct 10 to a compressor 51a, cooled in a water-cooled exchanger 53, further compressed to 145 p.s.i. in a compressor 55, and after being cooled in a water-cooled exchanger 57 is divided into a feed portion and into a refrigerant portion which traverse paths 17, 57, respectively of a heat exchanger 16, paths 23, 59 of heat exchanger 22 cooled by an external refrigerant e.g., ammonia and paths 29, 61 of an exchanger 26 cooled by recycled refrigerant nitrogen in a path 31. The refrigerant stream of nitrogen is then fed through a duct 62 to the turbine 63, and thence to the liquefier path 37 where it condenses the feed stream in path 35 which discharges product liquid nitrogen through an automatic pressure control valve 41 into a receiver 72 having a vent duct 74 connected to the delivery duct 65 of the turbine 63. In liquefying a gas differing in boiling point to the refrigerant gas the two gases traverse separate circuits. In a modification the expansion of the compressed refrigerant gas is effected in two turbines in series.
