Abstract
A building unit is formed by moulding a mixture of natural cellulosic fibres, powdered calcined bauxite, and a hydraulic cement at a pressure of 10,000-80,000 p.s.i. and allowing to set. The fibres are preferably of uniform length, e.g. 1/12 to 4 inches, and may be of coir or jute waste, cotton or rice stalks, wood shavings or bagasse. The fibres may be first treated with steam and then with an aqueous fire-proofing solution of calcium chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium sulphate, or an alum. The bauxite may have a particle size of less than 200 BSS. The hydraulic cement may be Portland, magnesite, blast furnace, or hydrophobic cement. Calcined magnesite cement is preferably burnt at 1100-1300 DEG F. and ground to a particle size of at 200 BSS. The amount of bauxite present may be 5-100% based on the hydraulic cement. An aqueous solution of calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, magnesium sulphate, sodium silicate, or an alum may be present as a setting accelerator. Calcium nitrate, sulphate, or ligno sulphonate may also be present. In the examples the proportion of fibres (based on fibres, bauxite, and cement) is in the range of ca 32-63%.
