930,858. Mixing-appliances. A. STULZ. March 21, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 10231/61. Class 86. In a food mixer a rotatable frame 2 is journailed freely on the shaft 3 which drives planetary stirrers 1 through the gears 4, 5; the stirrer shafts have additional gears 6 meshing with the gear 7 which is loose on shaft 3 and connected to the outer members 9, 10 of a friction brake 8. The intermediate member 14 of the brake is held stationary by engagement of the lugs 16 thereon in recesses in the cover 18, which itself engages the bowl 19. When stirring materials of low viscosity, the gear 7 is braked and the frame 2 rotates rapidly in counter-direction to the shaft 3, causing the stirrers to rotate rapidly. When, on the other hand, the stirrers encounter high resistance as with doughs, the braking effect on the loose gear 7 is counteracted and may be completely offset, so that the counter-rotation of the frame 2 is reduced and may cease completely; the frame 2 then rotates with the shaft 3 and the stirrers do not rotate on their axes. The stirrers may have sharp edges and be angularly set in such a way that the stirred material offers greater resistance to the rotation of the stirrers about the central shaft than to that about their own axes.
