Abstract

Metal halides, which volatalize at temperatures below the melting point of the parent metal, particularly aluminium and titanium iodides are prepared by contacting gaseous halogen with heated metal in an evacuated reaction vessel provided with a removable liner of the same metal or of a different metal that forms an inert coherent halide film in operation. According to examples (i) a glass tube, fitted with an aluminium liner sealed to the glass with asbestos wool was filled with coarse aluminium and heated to 500 DEG -525 DEG C. under vacuum after which at 600 DEG C., iodine vapour was reacted to form the triiodide. After several runs the liner was removed and pulverised to form a fresh charge of metal, (ii) a similar run was effected with a titanium lined metal to form, at 650 DEG C., titanium tetraiodide. Reference is made to molybdenum fluorination using a copper liner and to the production of the halides of Al, Ti and Zr, tetrachlorides of V and Mo and to tungsten hexa-chloride and hexabromide.
