930,715. Golf-practising appliances. A. T. HUNTER. Oct. 26, 1961, No. 38386/61. Class 132 (2). A golf-practising mat comprises strips of bristles 16, 17 (preferably nylon) mounted in a layer 4 of vinyl or polyvinyl plastics material on a wooden base 2, backed by corrugated rubber or sponge rubber 12. The bristle surfaces approximate in width to the diameter of a golf ball, are formed with depressions 23 in which to tee the ball, and are coloured to mark the area of the strips at which a club head, during its swing, should ideally enter the bristles prior to striking the ball 19 or 21. The mat illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is also provided with a guide line 22 marking the proper point of entry for the club head, this point of entry being further from the teeing position in the case of strip 16, as compared with the arrangement for strip 17, the purpose being to provide facilities for practising with the woods and longer irons on the strip 16, and with the shorter irons on strip 17. Also to this end, the bristles 28 at the teeing position of strip 16 are shorter than the corresponding bristles of strip 17. Bristles 40 of extra stiffness, placed in the path of the club head, click when hit by the club to indicate a correct swing, and/ or upright terminals 32 wired in a circuit containing a buzzer or lamp 36 are bridged by the club when the latter swings correctly. The mat may be pivotally mounted on a base for adjustment to allow a golfer to vary the angle of swing of the club, or alternatively the mat may carry two rows of bristles which are inclined to each other instead of being parallel as in Fig. 1.
