Apparatus for breaking up incrustations on a melting furnace charge comprises a pneumatically operated poker 24 attached to a doubleacting pneumatic cylinder 19 pivotally mounted on a cantilever arm 18 itself pivotally attached at 17 to a rotary shaft 16 mounted on a truck 10, said cylinder 19 being attached to a bracket 22 on said shaft 16 by a second double-acting pneumatic cylinder 29. The arm 18 is also attached to bracket 22 by an extensible rod 25. Hand wheels 14 and 15 respectively steer the truck and manoeuvre the poker 24, cylinders 19 and 29 respectively providing for its vertical and horizontal adjustment. A compressed air tank 33 on the truck supplies a pipe 31 and filter 34, Fig. 3, connected to cylinder 19 through valves 43 and 45, to driving motors 40 through valve 38 and three-way valve 39, to poker 24 through valve 49, to cylinder 29 through reducing valve 41 and three-way valve 42, and to a foot-operated main control valve 36.. The latter has two extreme positions and a neutral position, and in one extreme position valve 38 is actuated to drive the truck motors 40, whereupon, after position the truck, valve 42 can be operated to position the poker 24 laterally. Valve 38 is then moved to its other extreme position in which valve 43 is opened normally open valve 45 being closed to position the poker vertically, and valve 49 is opened through a time-delay valve 47 to actuate the poker. When valve 36 is returned either to neutral or to its first extreme position, the poker ceases operation and is withdrawn vertically.
