Abstract

Apparatus for the pyrolysis of hydrocarbon comprises an externally heated pyrolysis tube (4) containing a downwardly extending injection tube (3) and an upwardly extending core tube (6) both opening into an injection zone, the injection tube having separate delivery tubes for hydrocarbon (15) and primary diluent gas (16) mixed in a shear type atomizing nozzle (17) and surrounded by an insulated casing (24) forming an annular passage with the pyrolysis tube for preheated secondary diluent gas (8) and the core tube being for the introduction of superheated secondary diluent having an open top disposed near the atomizing nozzle and forming an annular reaction zone with the pyrolysis tube through which the gaseous reaction mixture passes. The nozzle 17 has ports 18 for the diluent into which lead, at 90 degrees, ports 19 carrying the hydrocarbon. The ports 18 then diverge slightly, e.g. at about 11 degrees to the vertical. The casing 24 preferably comprises a number of relatively movable units having spacing "ears" 23 which allow passage of diluent. <PICT:0930586/III/1> The casing 6 preferably contains an inner casing 7, which is substantially impervious having only small openings 35 and 36 in its ends to allow escape of gas, thereby forming a narrow annular p passage to provide a heat exchange section to superheat the diluent. This is positioned at a point where the heat requirements of the reaction are normally small. If desired a catalyst may be disposed in the reaction zone or injected through inlet 9 with the superheated secondary diluent. The hydrocarbon may be an oil or gas and the diluent is preferably steam, although hydrogen or air preferably diluted with nitrogen or flue gas may be used, in a ratio to hydrocarbon of 1:10 to 5:1, the amount passing through the core 6 preferably forming 5-40%. The pyrolysis tube is preferably forming 5-40%. The pyrolysis tube is preferably heated in a furnace fired at a plurality of spaced points to heat the tube wall to at least 1685 DEG F., e.g. 1700 DEG -2000 DEG F.
