Abstract

930,514. Laminates. BAKELITE Ltd. Feb. 12, 1962 [Feb. 22, 1961], No. 6476/61. Class 140. In making a casting core or industrial tool comprising inner and outer skins 3, 5 of fibrous material impregnated with cold-setting resin and a honeycomb core 4 similarly impregnated by shaping the layers over a plaster of Paris or other former 1 adherence of the honeycomb layer in the case of complex shapes is ensured by allowing the resin in the layer to harden, heating it to soften the resin and render the layer limp, placing it in contact with the unhardened skin layer 3 and maintaining it in position until it cools and sets. The honeycomb cells may be filled with resin-impregnated mineral material such as vermiculite. The resins employed may be epoxy or polyester resins, the honeycomb layer may be of paper, cotton cloth, or glass fabric, and the skin layers of glass mat or fabric. The former 1 is pre-coated with several layers of wax, each polished after application, and a layer of polyvinyl alcohol, to ensure release of the laminate; two surface coats 2, of epoxy or polyester resin composition containing a setting-agent and a mineral filler such as slate powder, are then applied followed by a coat of the same resin, without filler, to which the first skin, of glass mat or cloth, is applied. The resin-impregnated honeycomb layer 4, cut into pieces to assist shaping and heated to render it limp, is then adhered to the layer 3 and, after hardening, the second resinimpregnated skin layer 5 is laid on, followed by outer coatings 6 identical with those applied at 2. The epoxy resin used may be the polydiglycidyl ether of diphenylol propane, and the polyester resin a poly-propylene maleate/ phthalate/adipateP-styrene mixture. Specifictions 591,772 and 628,180 are referred to.
