Abstract

Exfoliated material, e.g. vermiculite, is bonded by mixing the material with an alkali metal, ethyl or methyl silicate, compressing the mixture to the desired shape, and subjecting the mixture, while under compression, to the action of carbon dioxide. A solution of an alkali metal silicate, particularly sodium silicate, is preferably employed. The compression pressure is preferably at least 50 p.s.i. The mixture may be dried by means of a dry, inert gas. Specification 828,229 is referred to.ALSO:Exfoliated material, e.g. vermiculite, is bonded by mixing the material with an alkali metal, ethyl or methyl silicate, compressing the mixture to the desired shape, and subjecting the mixture, while under compression, to the action of carbon dioxide.
