Abstract

929,859. Automatic level control. UNION TANK CAR CO. Feb. 6, 1962 [Oct. 16, 1961], No. 4584/62. Class 38 (4). In a system for automatically emptying an enclosed vessel by fluid pressure applied when a detector senses that the liquid contents have reached a predetermined level, the fluid pressure is cut off after a predetermined time and restored after a further predetermined time if the detector falsely indicates that the liquid is still at the predetermined level. As shown, liquid material such as sewage passes into an enclosed tank 10 through a non-return valve 14 until the level within reaches electrode 28 whereupon a self-holding relay 34 is energized from a source 30, 32. This energizes a time switch 36 and a solenoid 38 to move a valve 22 from a position in which it vents the tank to atmosphere at 24 to one in which it connects the tank with an air pressure supply at 26. The material is then forced out through a non-return valve 18 and this ejection continues for a predetermined time until time switch contact 70 breaks the selfholding circuit of relay 34. Solenoid 38 is then de-energized and valve 22 returned to its venting position in readiness for the next cycle. If, for any reason such as the earthing of electrode 28 by clinging material, relay 34 is not deenergized by the operation of time switch 36, ejection still ceases by virtue of time switch contact 62 de-energizing solenoid 38. Contact 62 then energizes a time delay switch 40 which deenergizes relay 34 after a predetermined time so that the apparatus is reset to ensure the next ejection.
