929,492. Wood grinders. NORTON CO. Sept. 3, 1959 [Sept. 9, 1958], No. 30080/59. Class 59. A wood pulp forming machine comprises a plurality of rotary conical grinding wheels 20 adapted to engage a log supported on pairs of freely rotatable rollers 13-13 to 17-17, the grinding wheels being adapted to press against the periphery of the log to effect rotation and axial feeding thereof on the supporting rollers while reducing the diameter of the log by a grinding action which pulls the fibres of the log free. The axis of rotation of each grinding wheel is inclined towards the infeed end of the machine and towards the log being ground, the infeed inclination of the axis of rotation being about one half the angle between the conical face of the wheel and the base thereof. Each grinding wheel is driven by a motor M, Fig. 2, and is rotatably supported in a vertically slidable head 21 connected to the piston-rod 24 of a piston 30 which is normally held pressed against the bottom wall of cylinder 31 by air pressure. Solution is sprayed by nozzles 50 against the surfaces of the grinding wheels to keep them clean and flow over the surface of the log to act upon the log to produce a loosening of the fibres. The supporting rollers may be smooth or grooved. The log may be held down by means of one or more resilientlysupported rollers. Specifications 845,497 and 929,493 are referred to.
