Abstract

In a continuous process of aluminising a ferrous base, the base is first coated with a liquid containing molybdenum trioxide, tungsten trioxide or compounds decomposable to these oxides, the coating is reduced at a temperature of at least 1850 DEG F. to yield at least 0.3 gms. per square foot of surface of tungsten or molybdenum which is completely diffused into the base to form a diffused layer containing not more than 18% of tungsten or molybdenum, and the aluminium is then applied preferably by hot dipping. The liquid coating may be applied as a dispersion in water containing starch or as a dispersion in oil or glycerine and the decomposable compounds may be molybdic acid, tungstic acid, ammonium molybdate or tungstate or sodium tungstate. Reduction and diffusion is effected in hydrogen at 1850 DEG F. to 2100 DEG F. the difiused layer containing 0.3 to 1 gm. per square foot of diffused metal. The aluminium coating is formed by hot dipping in molten p aluminium at 1200 DEG F. to 1300 DEG F. The ferrous strip, sheet, strand or wire may be electrolytically cleaned prior to coating and also anodically or chemically cleaned after the first coating to remove any free tungsten or molybdenum which has not diffused into the ferrous base.
