Abstract

A filter medium for reducing the acid content of oxidized mineral oils and discouraging the formation of acids in mineral oils consists of a metal or an oxide of a metal, which reacts with acids present in oxidized mineral oils to give an insoluble salt, attached to the surface of a nonmetallic filter material which is substantially inert to the components of the oil. Suitable metals include magnesium, tin, zinc, sodium, and aluminium. Suitable oxides include alumina and magnesia. Suitable filter materials include cotton, glass, rubber, paper, porcelain and synthetic materials such as nylon. The metal or metal oxide may be in powder or granular form, and may be attached to the filter by means of an insoluble resin, for example, a butyral or urea resin or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride. The filter may be in the form of a meter edge, flower-pot or cotton type filter medium. The oil may be an oil used for lubricating internal combustion engines or for cooling transformers. Specification 783,165 is referred to.ALSO:A filter medium for reducing the acid content of oxidised mineral oils and discouraging the formation of acids in mineral oils consists of a metal or oxide of a metal which reacts with acids present in oxidised mineral oils to give insoluble salts, attached to the surface of a non-metallic filter material which is substantially inert to the components of the oil. suitable metals include magnesium, tin, zinc, sodium and aluminium.
