Abstract
A process for making a compound which is suitable for use in non-aqueous preparations for rendering textile materials water repellent comprises heating a nitrogen-containing organic compound which forms an aminoplast with formaldehyde in the presence of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms with at least enough paraformaldehyde to replace all the hydrogen atoms bonded to nitrogen atoms by methylol groups, an aromatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic acid anhydride, and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms, the intensity of the heating being such that the lower alcohol is slowly distilled off and being continued until the reaction mixture becomes clear. The products can be dissolved for use in petroleum ether, chlorinated hydrocarbons or can be melted together with waxes, such as paraffin wax or montan wax. Any adverse effects of heating beyond the time when it becomes clear can be minimized or prevented by incorporating into the reaction mixture an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule, in amount usually 0,2 to 0,6 mol. per mol. of nitrogen-containing compound. Into the products there can be incorporated an alcoholate of aluminium or zirconium with a monohydric alcohol. Suitable nitrogen-containing compounds are melamine, urea and dicyandiamide. Phthalic, malonic, succinic and maleic anhydrides are specified. Octadecyl Octadecyl alcohol and ethyl cyclohexanol are specified alcohols. In Example (1) melamine, methanol, paraformaldehyde, phthalic anhydride and octadecyl alcohol are heated with distillation of the methanol until the mixture becomes clear. A solution of the product and paraffin wax in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent is used to impart water repellency to a cotton poplin jacket. Zirconium isopropylate can be used as an additional component; (2) stearic acid is incorporated into the original reaction mixture and all the methanol is distilled off. In Example (5) a similarly obtained reaction product of melamine, paraformaldehyde, maleic anhydride hexadecyl alcohol and stearic acid is fused with paraffin wax and the product after solidification is used in an impregnating solution.ALSO:Textile materials are rendered water-repellent by treatment with a non-aqueous preparation of a compound obtained by heating a nitrogencontaining organic which forms an aminoplast with formaldehyde in the presence of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms with at least enough paraformaldehyde to replace all the hydrogen atoms bonded to nitrogen atoms by methylol groups, an aromatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic anhydride, and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms, the intensity of the heating being such that the lower alcohol is slowly distilled off and being continued until the reaction mixture becomes clear.
