Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions for topical application comprise a carrier and a flavone or 2,3-dihydroflavone of general formula <FORM:0928150/VI/1> or <FORM:0928150/VI/2> wherein each of R1 to R10 may represent a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical or an alkoxy radical in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an axyloxy radical in which the acyl group contains from 1 to 5 carbon atoms in admixture with a steroid of the pregnane (C21 nucleus) series having topical anti-inflammatory activity according to a specified test, e.g. cortisone, prednisone and prednisolone and derivatives thereof including halogen derivatives, alkali metal phosphates, hydrocarbon dicarboxylic acid 21-hemi-esters and their water-soluble salts, many specific examples of which are given. The compositions may be in conventional forms suitable for topical application, e.g. ointments, lotions, creams, nasal sprays, drops, suppositories, aerosols, and powders which may optionally also comprise antibiotics, e.g. neomycin, tetracyclines, novobiocin, erthromycin, penicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, bacitracin, polymyxin, tyrothrycin and gramicidin; antifungal agents, e.g. iodochlorohydroxyquin, filipin and nystatin; vasoconstrictors, e.g. phenylephrine and isoproterenol and the local an sthetics, e.g. procaine, phenocaine, tetracaine, lidocaine, primoxine and ethylaminobenzoate.
