Abstract

A fluid composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, a plasticizer, an oxygen producing compound and an oxygen adsorbing compound (both defined) is heated to above 200 DEG F. to liberate oxygen followed by heating to above 350 DEG F. to fuse the cellular product. Preferred proportions are given. Specified oxygen producers are alkali metal (e.g. sodium) and alkaline earth metal perborates and chlorates, whilst the oxygen adsorbers are barium sulphate, rosin coated chalk, borax, silica and carbon black. Plasticizers can be monomers, polymers or their mixtures and are exemplified. Optional ingredients are pigments, e.g. ferric oxide, silicones-for cellular uniformity, and an acidic substance, e.g. a metal hydrogen phosphate for improving the foam structure.ALSO:Cellular polyvinyl chloride, is obtained by mixing a fluid composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, a plasticizer, an oxygen producing compound and an oxygen adsorbing compound (both defined), heating to a temperature greater than 200 DEG F. to liberate oxygen followed by heating to above 350 DEG F. to fuse the product. Preferred proportions are given together with suitable ingredients. Specified oxygen producers are alkali metal (e.g. sodium) and alkaline earth metal perborates and chlorates; whilst the oxygen adsorbers are barium sulphate, resin coated chalk, borax, silica and carbon black. Plasticizers can be monomers, polymers, or their mixtures and are exemplified. Optional ingredients are pigments e.g. ferric oxide, silicones for cellular uniformity, and an acidic substance e.g. a metal hydrogen phosphate, for improving the foam structure.
