[Also in Groups XXVIII, XXIX and XXXI] A pump piston 13 is directly connected to the pistons 10A, 10B of an I.C. engine, and is reciprocated in a cylinder 14 formed in a member 15 slidable in a bore 14A, 14B and having an enlarged portion 17 forming a piston which, in the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, is slidable in a closed air cylinder 18 so that depending on the pressure developed in the pump chambers 14A, 14B and the speed of reciprocation and mass of the member 15, more or less liquid is delivered to the outlet 25 which is connected by a pedal actuated valve 31 to the inlet 120 and to a reversing valve 33 controlling the flow to and from pipes 28, 29 connected through a braking valve 34 to a motor 32 which may drive a vehicle. The I.C. engine has inlets 45 to the compression spaces 19A, ducts 19 leading to the engine cylinder, and exhausts 46. Air may be supplied to the cylinder 18 for starting the engine. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the cylinder 18 is filled with liquid and the chambers 18A, 18B are connected to air chambers or cylinders having spring loaded pistons. The chambers 18A, 18B may be connected to the pump chambers by means of the valve 59 to vary the damping. The chamber 18A is connectable by a channel 65 to an accumulator 85 controlled by a valve 26 for starting the engine, the valve being opened and the accumulator recharged automatically when the engine starts. Fuel is fed to the engine by a pump 125 and it is stated that the engine may have " bounce " chambers, that the pistons 10 may be of two diameters, that they may move in opposite directions and that the cylinders may be movable. It is also stated that several motors may be used and that one or more may be locked out of action. The circuit may include an accumulator which may govern the engine.
