Abstract

927,149. Binaural pick-ups and recorders. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 17, 1959 [June 20, 1958], No. 20793/59. Class 40 (4). In a device for recording or playing back grooved stereophonic records, including a first part comprising an arm having a stylus at one end and a body at the other end, the first part is pivotable through a solid angle with respect to a second part and the second part is rotatably adjustable about its longitudinal axis with respect to the first part. In an electrostatic transducer device, one end 5, Fig. 1, of a stylus arm 1 has the shape of a segment of a sphere and fits into a concave part of a block 6 fixed to a housing 24. The two curved faces are urged together by compression springs 28 or by a rubber ring. A disc 3 integral with the stylus arm 1 is provided with electrodes 7, 9 which co-operate with electrodes 4, 10 fixed to the housing to provide variable capacitors. Amplifiers 8, 11 are connected to the capacitors. In an electromagnetic device, Figs. 2, 3, the first part comprises a stylus arm 1 fixed to a disc 3 of soft magnetic material which is suspended in two gimbal rings 12, 13. Four equally spaced poles 14, 15, 16, 17 of yokes 20, 21 having coils 18, 19 co-operate with disc 3 and form the second part. Permanent magnet 22 polarizes the magnetic circuits constituted by the yokes. In a third device, Figs. 4, 5, a pin 30 at the end of arm 1 remote from the stylus 2 bears against an indentation in a piece 25. A ring magnet 3 is fixed to the arm 1 and co-operates with polepieces 14, 15, 16, 17 of electromagnets 20, 21. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 897,323.
