Abstract

927,011. Mixing fluids in flow. D. LAING, and J. D. JONES. March 16, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10071/59. Class 86. In a device for supplying a small controlled proportion of an additive, e.g. a fluoride, to a main fluid, e.g. water, flowing in a conduit 12, the additive is contained in a flexible bag 22 subjected externally to the pressure of fluid in the space 28 which is in communication through the passage 30 with the high-pressure P1 side of a pressure differential orifice 19 in the conduit 12. The additive is expelled through a flexible non-return valve 58, a sinuous passage 44, and a groove 62 in a valve spindle 60, into the conduit 12 on the low-pressure P2 side of the orifice 19. The passage 44 has such cross-section and length that flow of the additive therein is laminar at the working pressure and takes place at a rate substantially proportional to the pressure-differential P1/P2 across the orifice 19; as shown, it is a helical groove resembling a screw-thread. The orifice 19 is formed in an annulus of resilient material which flexes, see Fig. 4 (not shown), so that the rate of flow of the main fluid through it is also proportional to the pressure-differential P1/P2. For a given range of mains pressures, an additional rearlinear flow restrictor 29 limits the pressure differential at the orifice 19 to a maximum which is within the range for linear operation. The valve spindle 60 is attached to a piston 70 and flexible diaphragm 82 biased by a spring 72 so that when the pressure falls below the minimum value for linear working, the groove 62 is occluded. When sufficient flow takes place in the conduit 12, fluid from the P1 side of the orifice 19 acts on the piston and diaphragm through passages 74, 76, raising the spindle 60 and placing groove 62 in communication with the conduit 12. If the shut-off valve in conduit 12 be downstream of the apparatus, the latter is modified so that the upper side of the piston and diaphragm is subjected to pressure P2 in addition to that of the spring; when flow is stopped, P2 becomes equal to and balances P1 and the spring closes the valve as before.
