Abstract
926,495. Rotary pumps. B. H. REFSON. Dec. 19, 1961 [June 27, 1961], No. 23295/61. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump of the fixed abutment, gyratory piston type, in which a piston 18 is caused to gyrate in a pump chamber 11 by an eccentric pin 26 on a rotary drive shaft 24, comprises a flexible tubular sheath 31 of impermeable material e.g. polyethylene, stainless steel, or polytetrafluoroethylene, which may be corrugated, having its respective ends rigid in fluid-tight manner with the piston and a casing 12 providing the pump chamber, the sheath loosely embracing the driving shaft and the eccentric pin. The piston has a projecting lobe 19 which extends into a recess 13 in the casing 12. A ball bearing 27 has the inner race 28 rigid with the pin 26 and the outer race 29 a tight fit within an axial recess 30 in the piston. Alternatively the bearing 27 may be a plain bearing fitted within the recess 30. The outer end of the sheath is flanged at 32 and may be welded to the casing 12 and/or clamped thereto by an end plate 33, or by studs and interposed sealing rings. In a modification the sheath is separate from the piston, flanged outwardly at the inner end and secured to the piston. In another modification the sheath is extended into the recess 30 and closed to form a cap which contains the outer race of the ball bearing. In another embodiment the pump chamber and piston are of tear-drop shape.
