A valve unit, for a vessel dispensing a liquid such as beer, comprises a normally closed valve member displaced to allow gaseous pressure fluid into the vessel and pass the discharge therefrom, the unit also incorporating a safety valve. A tube 10 extends substantially to the bottom of the vessel and a CO 2 dispensing system is coupled to the valve unit. The valve body 15 is depressed until an element 16 abuts a rubber ring 34 and the gas flows through an annular space 53 and apertures 12 into the vessel. Beer is forced up the tube 10, through recesses 14 into the interior of the valve body 15 and through the aperture in the latter into a discharge pipe 50. When the valve body 15 is closed, excessive pressure in the vessel will force beer up the pipe 10 and force the safety valve 19 off its seat, the excess pressure being discharged to atmosphere. Alternatively the valve unit may be mounted at the bottom of the vessel, in which case the gaseous pressure fluid is admitted to the tube 10, which extends towards the top of the container, and beer is dispensed via the apertures 12 and passage 35. In an alternative embodiment, see Fig. 3, a valve member 36 is moved downwardly and the gas flows through apertures 12 into the vessel. The member 36 is of rubber or the like and projects beyond metal sleeves 39, 40 to abut the cup like part 11 and seal off the pressure gas from the discharge.
