A honing clamp for chisels, plane irons and like blades having a cutting edge across an end comprises two clamping members, with inwardly facing surfaces provided one on each member to engage the sides of a blade to be honed, and the members being guided and adjustable laterally to vary the distance between those surfaces, and means for tightening the members on to a blade placed between the surfaces in any adjusted position of the members, the device also providing support for the undersurface of the blade to be clamped by the surfaces, and rolling support being provided on the underside of the device. A screw 1 has portions 2, 3 of opposite hand separated by a plain portion 4 on which is mounted a roller 7 retained by circlips 6. A knurled and slotted head 9 is secured to one end of the screw by a pin 10. Clamping members 11A, 11B have downward lugs threadedly engaging the screw portions 2, 3. Pins 16 projecting inwardly from the member 11B fit slidably in holes 17 in the member 11A. Blades in the widest range are supported on the treads 14 and gripped between the risers 18; blades in the intermediate width range are supported on the treads 15 and gripped between the risers 19; blades in the narrowest range are supported on the pins 16 and gripped between the risers 20. The risers 18, 19 on both members are undercut to urge the blade down to the supporting treads. The risers 18, 19, 20 on the member 11B are convex in plan but those on the member 11A are straight, so that one side edge is pressed squarely against the straight riser, whether the side edges are parallel or taper. The outer surfaces 21 of the clamping members are concave in plan for more comfortable holding by the fingers and thumb of one hand of the user moving the device to and fro on a hone B.
