Abstract

The high temperature part of an electric resistance heating element consists of an insulating refractory base having flame sprayed thereon particles each of the composition (Mo1-yMy) (Si1-xA1x)2 in which M is one or more of Ti Zr Hf Ta Nb V Cr and W, x is from 0,1 to 0,6 and y is from 0 to 0,7. The particles form a layer 10-500m thick. A ceramic component, forming up to 50% by volume of the layer may be included. The ceramic component may be alumina, with or without silica or bentonite, and boron-containing substances may be added to include up to 0,3% by weight of boron in the layer. Specifications 731,616, 791,323, 899,464 and U.S.A. Specification 2,831,242 are referred to.ALSO:The high temperature part of an electric resistance heating element consists of a sintered mass of particles each of the composition (Mo1-yMy)(Si1-xAlx)2 in which M is one or more of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Nb, V, Cr and W, x is from 0.1 to 0.6 and y is from 0 to 0.7. A ceramic component, forming up to 50% by volume of the sintered mass, may be included. The ceramic component may be alumina, with or without silica or bentonite, and boron-containing substances may be added to include up to 0.3% by weight of boron in the sintered mass. The particles of the appropriate composition are produced by mixing the constituent elements and heating under hydrogen. The reaction product is then ball-milled to a particle size of 3-7m mixed with alumina (with or without bentonite) extruded and sintered firstly at 1400 DEG C. in hydrogen and then at 1700 DEG C. in air. The term "sintered mass" also includes the result of flame spraying particles of the appropriate composition on to an insulating refractory base. Specifications 731,616, 791,323, 899,464 and U.S.A.
