Abstract

Glycerol dichlorhydrin is prepared by reacting substantially equimolar proportions (i.e. within 10% either way) of allyl alcohol and chlorine at -5 DEG C. to 35 DEG C. in the presence of 0.15-5 parts by weight of 15-45% by weight aqueous hydrochloric acid per part by weight of allyl alcohol. The reaction may be carried out in the presence or absence of light or u.v. radiation.
