Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerized alone or with vinyl acetate in an aqueous medium in the presence of at least 0,02% by weight, preferably 0,1 to 7%, of the monomer or monomers to be polymerized of a cetyl trimethyl ammonium salt to produce a product having good antistatic properties which may be used for gramaphone records. The cetyl trimethyl ammonium salt may be added in one step, in a number of steps or continuously during the polymerization after the initial introduction. The preferred catalysts for the polymerization are peroxy compounds. Antifoam agents and common additives such as plasticizers may be added. The polymers produced may be compounded or blended with other polymeric materials. In the example vinyl chloride is copolymerized with vinyl acetate in the presence of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, silicone antifoam agent, hydrogen peroxide and distilled water.
