Abstract

Film-forming compositions which have good adhesion to wood panels, glass and metal comprise an acrolein resin and one or more hardening agents containing free NH2 and/or NH groups bound to non-carboxylic carbon atoms chosen from the group of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic amines, including polyamines, polyamide resins and 2-thionotetrahydrotriazines. By "acrolein resin" is meant a resinous reaction product of acrolein with one or more other substances such as alcohols, phenols, hydroxy-containing polyesters and epoxy compounds optionally in the presence of a vinyl compound (see Group IV(a)). Suitable solvents are ethanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, styrene and toluene. A pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be present. In addition, vinyl compounds such as acrylonitrile and styrene may be present during the reaction. Specified hardening agents are cyclohexylamine, dicyclohexylamine, 2-ethylhexyl- and di-(2-ethylhexyl)-amine, 3-methoxy- and cyclohexyl propylamine, laurylamine, stearylamine, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, trimethylene diamine, dipropylene triamine, cyclohexylpropylene diamine, 4,41-diphenylamine, 3,31-bis-(methyl-imino)-dipropylamine, polyamide resins obtained from di- or trimerized fat acids and polyamines, e.g. dimerized linoleic acid and diethylene triamine, and 2-thiono-tetra-hydrotriazines substituted in the 5 and/or 4,6- positions by alkyl or aminoalkyl groups. The hardener is preferably added to a solution of the resin, suitable solvents being ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, styrene and toluene. The hardener may also be in solution, in for example an alcohol, a mixture of ethanol, water and acetone, or ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Pigments and fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be added. Hardening of the composition may occur at room temperature or may be effected at elevated temperatures, e.g. 70 DEG -120 DEG C. The films have good adhesion to wood, glass and metal and have improved resistance to chemicals, e.g. caustic soda and acetic acid.
