Abstract

924,314. Digital to analogue converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 26, 1962 [Feb. 28, 1961], No. 3117/62. Class 40 (1). A digital to analogue converter comprises a number of relay circuits each of which is such that one contact provides both a holding current for the relay and an analogue current. Serial data signals are passed to a register 10 and are read out in parallel by AND gates 17-20 controlled by a timing pulse: relays K1-K4 are thereby set to represent the signal. Meanwhile, new data signals can be passed to the register, gates 17-20 being blocked. Contacts K1a- K4a select one or other of two voltages, dependent on the corresponding data bit, which voltage is passed to one or other of two converter units C11-C12, selection being by way of relays K11, K12. Each section of a converter unit, e.g. section 41, comprises a circuit including relay K41. If K1 is energized momentarilyindicating a "0"-K41 is earthed and is energized, whereby contact K41a reverses and holds the relay K41 energized. Resistor 45 is weighted so that a current proportional to the data bit passes to a summing amplifier when K41 is not energized, the analogue signal then appearing at 55. If now relay K1 is de-energized, representing a " 1," relay K41 is shorted and contact K41a connects resistor 46 in circuit thereby to apply a weighted current to the output.
