Abstract

Polyvalent metallo organic polymers are manufactured by adding a monohalo organo metallic compound wherein the metal is polyvalent, to a solution of a polymer containing vinyl aromatic groups and in which at least part of the aromatic nuclei are substituted with alkali metal. The products are linear polymers containing pendant organo metallic groups, a typical structure being <FORM:0923461/IV(a)/1> wherein M is the organo metal group of the polyvalent metal and R, R1 and R2 are radicals derived from vinyl or vinylidene compounds. Preferred monohalo compounds are trimethyl tin chloride, triphenyl tin chloride and/or trimethyl silyl chloride. The example illustrates the manufacture of <FORM:0923461/IV(a)/2> from triphenyl tin chloride and the lithium substituted product obtained from poly-p-bromostyrene and butyl lithium, using tetrahydrofuran as solvent. Polymers containing As, Sb, Bi, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, B, Al, Gd, In, Tl, Zn, Cd, Hg, Mg, Ti, Zr or Hf may be obtained. Other monomers which may be used in forming the polymers used are ethylene, acrylonitrile, propylene, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride.
