Abstract

<PICT:0923330/III/1> The reactivity of phosphorus pentasulphide, as measured by the time required for a given temperature rise in the reaction with 2-ethyl hexanol, is reduced from an initially high value by heating the sulphide at a temperature below its m.pt, e.g. up to 90 DEG C. below, for a selected time and then cooling. The reduction in reactivity achieved depends on both the temperature and the length of time of such heating. As shown in Fig. 1 the initial high reactivity sulphide is formed in generator 11 as a vapour and passed to condenser 14 from where it condenses and collects as a liquid in container 16. Here the flaker drum 18 cooled to approx. 200 DEG C. delivers the solid sulphide via pipe 19 to a jacketed screw conveyor 20. This can be controlled to give the desired temperature and, by varying the speed of the helix 22 by means of variable speed reducer 25, a desired residence time can be achieved before delivering via pipe 29 to a final cooling to ambient temperature and storage. A sample of sulphide of lowreactivity may have its reactivity raised a controlled amount by first melting the sulphide, quenching it and then submitting it to the process of the invention.
