Abstract

Modified polyvinyl alcohols soluble in cold water are obtained by graft polymerizing in homogenous phase one or more vinyl esters on to one or more polyalkylene glycols or derivatives thereof with the aid of a free-radical initiator, and partially saponifying the resulting graft polymer so that a water-soluble product containing up to 50% by weight of <FORM:0922459/IV(a)/1> units is obtained. Vinyl esters specified are the acetate, propionate, butyrate, stearate and a formate/stearate mixture. Polyalkylene glycols specified are polyethylene glycol and oxyethylated polypropylene glycol. The graft polymers are preferably prepared by the process described in Specification 922,457. The saponification may be carried out in either an acid or an alkaline medium.
