Abstract

Dry-cleaning compositions comprise (a) a solvent such as benzine, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, tri- and per-chlorethylene, and methyl chloroform, and (b) an intensifier of general formula <FORM:0922270/III/1> wherein Ra is a C8-30-alkyl group, Rb and Rc are hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, or C1-3-alkoxy, R1 is an aromatic hydrocarbon group of not more than 10 carbon atoms, R11 is phenylene, -(CH2)nwhere n is 1 or 2, or -CH=CH-, and Me is hydrogen or a solvent-soluble salt-forming cation, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium or the cation of a C1-6-aliphatic amine, especially an ethanolamine such as triethanolamine. Intensifier (b), of which the preferred example is potassium o-(p-dodecylbenzoyl) benzoate, is usually present in amounts of 0,5-50, preferably 3-30, g./l., and the drycleaning bath generally also contains a concentration of water, added before or during the cleaning operation, such that the textile material when immersed will absorb the same quantity of water as it would in an atmosphere of 70-90% R.H. The bath may also contain C1-20 saturated aliphatic alcohols and ethanol-amides of C12-18-fatty acids.ALSO:The subsequent treatment of soiled clothing of wool, cotton, regenerated cellulose, leather, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, or acetate with aluminium, zirconium, titanium or siloxane compounds, and especially with a 2:1 mixture of aluminium diethylate monostearate and Indonesian paraffin wax in perchloroethylene, to render the clothing water-repellant, is intensified if the clothing is first dry-cleaned with a drycleaning solvent such as benzine, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, tri- and perchloroethylene or methyl chloroform which contains an intensifier of general formula <FORM:0922270/IV(a)/1> wherein Ra is a C8-30-alkyl group, Rb and Rc are hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or C1-3-alkoxy, R1 is an aromatic hydrocarbon group of not more than 10 carbon atoms, R11 is phenylene, -(CH2)nwhere n is 1 or 2, or -CH=CH-, and Me is hydrogen or a water-soluble saltforming cation, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium, or the cation of a C1-6-aliphatic amine (see Group III).
