Abstract
922,225. Determining physical qualities of materials. Sir JOHN GALLWAY (INSTRUMENTS) Ltd. June 1, 1959, No. 18652/59. Class 37. A probe for moisture determination comprises two elongated electrodes bonded together over substantially the whole of their length. As shown, the electrodes 1, 2 of aluminium, mild steel or stainless steel are separated by a layer 4 of glass fibre, the three members being bonded together by means of adhesive known under the Registered Trade Mark " Araldite." A moulded rubber handle 6 is provided. The probe is pointed at 10 to enable it to be inserted through a sack of grain without damage to the sack. Alternatively, a conical metal or other cap may be provided. In an alternative arrangement two electrodes of angle-section metal may be used to form a probe of square section. In another arrangement four angle-section electrodes may be secured together to form a maltese-cross section probe. The probe may be used in conjunction with resistance or capacitance measuring apparatus to determine the moisture content in grain, hay, straw, beans, sand, cement, gravel or comminuted coal. When the probe is used in the capacitance method of moisture determination, it is preferably connected via a coaxial lead having a toroidal transformer moulded into each end to a high-frequency source and a meter. Reference is also made to the probe being fixed inside a hopper or grain drier.
