Abstract
921,902. Moulding electrical insulation. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. June 22, 1960 [June 25, 1959], No. 21890/59. Class 87(2). A joint or repair in the thermoplastic insulation of electric cable is formed by enclosing one end of the exposed portion of the cable in a mould casing supporting the casing for axial movement relative to the cable, connecting the casing to a supply of thermoplastic material under pressure, and maintaining said pressure to build up material within the casing as the cable and casing are moved relatively to each other. Thermoplastic is forced from heated cylinder 14 by screw actuated piston 15 into an annular cavity 8 formed by grooves 9, 9<SP>1</SP> in mould casing 5 and mandrel 4 and when the cavity is full flows axially around the bulbous portion 12 of mandrel 4 and bonds with the insulation of cable 2. As more material is forced into the cavity 8 the injection apparatus is forced to the right over bared conductor 3 and a continuous stream of insulation is moulded. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the cable is tensioned by rubber lined clamps and the injection apparatus is moved axially by a motor driven screw device.
