921,341. Monogrannic signalling. SOCIETE D'ELECTRICITE MORS. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1960; Jan. 26, 1961], No. 27926/61. Class 118. A monogrannic signalling device consists of a number of glass fronted cells each containing a black liquid and a magnetic piston 14 having that face nearer the lens front 12 painted white, each piston being selectively moved forward or backwards in its cell to make up the desired sign, by an arrangement of electromagnets in accordance with the programme on a punched tape. A column of electromagnets corresponding to a column of cells L1, L2, L3, &c. is disposed behind the device and is mounted on a traversing carriage (Fig. 2, not shown) and pulses are sent to the electromagnets so that they are of the correct polarity for the display of the desired message. Details of the control circuit are described (Fig. 8, not shown). Construction. The cells are secured together by magnetic strips 8, 9a, 9b. Each piston 48 slides inside a jacket 39 consisting of an inner, non-magnetic jacket 40, e.g. of copper and encloses a magnet 49. In order to locate the piston positively either in the forward or the back position a front magnetic ring 41 and a back magnetic ring 42 co-operating with a magnetic disc 37 on the base of the cell are provided. Recesses 47 allow the liquid to circulate.
